Even if your job isn’t directly related to meditation, it shows that you’re probably really good at dealing with stress and tackling tough situations.

In this article, I’ll define what meditation is, what makes a hobby a hobby, and whether meditation can be considered a hobby.

I’ll also give you examples of meditative hobbies that are not only more ‘traditional’, but great and practical ways to experience the full benefits of meditation as well.

Meditation is a practice that involves intentionally focusing on something (like your breathing) or finding the present moment by disconnecting yourself from the past and/or future.

Daily meditation practice teaches us to be aware of our inner self, stay present, and get the most out of daily life.

The type of meditation you can choose from are endless. And depending on the type of meditation you choose, you can relax, increase your focus, reduce anxiety and stress, and more.

A Hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during your free time.

It’s important to note that a hobby doesn’t need to serve a particular purpose or require you to be ‘productive’ at all!

Some typical examples of a hobby can include things like:

  • Stamp Collecting
  • Knitting
  • Fishing

The goal of these activities aren’t so you can hit a certain quota or output. Instead, they are simply activities that you engage in… for the fun of it!

With the advancement of technology, Video Games and Social Media have also become hobbies for many people.

I’m not here to judge other pastimes, but if you’re looking for a hobby that will not only take your mind off things for the moment but also prepare you for the rest of the day, Meditation as a hobby stands a cut above the rest.

There are many benefits to hobby meditation and anyone can do it benefit from it.

Whether you’re in your 20s-30s interested in personal development, or you’re older in your 40s-50s looking for stress relief or holistic health, hobby meditation is a great way to spend your leisure time.

Low Cost

Many hobbies require hundreds if not thousands of dollars to get started. With meditation, all you really need is your true self. Of course there are ways to enhance your experience with eye masks, meditation cushions, and headphones for meditation. But these are nice to haves, not requirements.

Flexible Location and Time

Meditation as a hobby also doesn’t require you to be at a certain location at a certain time. The flexibility of being able to meditate anywhere at any time is a huge plus!

Improves Physical Health

One of the many benefits of meditation is improved physical health. Dr. Joe Dispenza has documented many astounding recoveries and healings of physical conditions.

Improves Mental Health

Meditation offers an improved mental health as well. The introspective nature of meditations helps us look within and realize things that seemed so important aren’t so important after all. It helps us re-prioritize and live life in a way that’s truly meaningful to us.

Lowers Stress Levels

Meditation helps with lowering stress by shifting your perspective on situations. What used to be a stressful event or memory can be used to fuel your personal development.

Increases Relaxation

One of the first skills you’ll ever learn in meditation is to relax. And the more meditation experience you have, the more you realize this active form of relaxation is way more relaxing than the passive forms of doing nothing (doom scrolling on social media or zoning out watching netflix). You’ll also achieve deeper physical and mental relaxation when you want to take a quick nap or go to bed at night.

Increases Discipline

One of the major benefits of meditation is definitely an increase in discipline. There’s something about telling your body to sit still in the midst of all the itches you want to scratch and letting go of all the thought that crop up. Training your body to think, feel, and act a certain way on demand naturally increases discipline in all areas of your life.

Increases Focus

Your increase in discipline will also lead to a natural increase in focus. A lot of meditation has to do with identifying and letting go of certain thoughts that aren’t serving you. When you’re used to doing this during a meditation, you’ll also be able to do this outside of your meditations, giving you a clear idea of how to most effectively navigate your busy day.

As I mentioned before, a hobby isn’t something that has to have a certain kind of output or result. The only two criterias any activity has to meet is:

  • Is it something that you enjoy doing?
  • Is it something that you do in your free time?

By this criteria, is meditation a hobby? Yes! Your meditation hobby is just as valid of a hobby as any other hobbies. And you should feel comfortable (encouraged, even) to share it as one!

Often when ‘hobbies’ are brought up in a conversation, it’s just a way of getting to know a person better –  to understand their interests, to get a better picture of what they’re about.

Some like to engage in other hobbies like reading and playing video games. The activity gives you an idea of the person you’re getting to know and your meditation hobby is no different!

But while meditation is technically considered and should be categorized as a hobby, let me share why I don’t think you should personally treat it like one in your regular practice.

When I think of the word ‘hobby’, I think of a casual activity that doesn’t require too much consistency, intention, and dedication.

After all, if you miss a weekend fishing trip or didn’t get to read your book before bed, “oh well, I’ll get to it next time,” right?

While you can treat your meditation hobby in this way, if you treat your meditation as a mere hobby, that’s all it will be – a hobby.

If you actually want to experience the full benefits of meditation, it has to be more than just on and off practice when it’s convenient. It must become a regular meditation practice.

Meditation requires dedication. Meditation needs to become a regular practice. Meditation must become a lifestyle.

This doesn’t mean that it has to be hard or some grueling activity. In fact, you can start small with 5-minute meditations that feel so amazing that you naturally start to meditate for longer periods of time.

It comes down to: “who are you doing this for”?

If you’re just doing this to have something interesting to share about yourself, a casual approach to meditation is perfectly fine.

But if you’re considering meditation as a hobby that will lead you to deep relaxations, a spiritual awakening, and personal development, I highly encourage you treat it more than ‘just a hobby’.

Set a consistent time for yourself. It can be right after you wake up. It can be in your car in the parking lot of your work before you go into work. It can be right before you go to bed. Whenever and wherever it is, take just a few minutes. Be intentional. The rewards will be tremendous.

If you do want to get started with meditation as a hobby, follow these 4 simple steps to experience your first meditation today.

Step 1

Remove all distractions. Silence your phone, close the curtains, and create an environment where you feel safe.

Step 2

Take a few minutes to think about a few things you’re grateful for. If nothing in particular comes to mind be thankful for being alive. For the eyes that give you vision, the mouth that gives you taste, the arms and legs that give you movement. There are so many things we take for granted.

Step 3

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Count to 8 on the inhale, hold it for 4, and count to 8 on the exhale. Do this 3 times.

Step 4

Tips For Your Meditation Journey

  • It’s not a big deal if you miss a day. What matters more is when you’re going to try again. 
  • Schedule a time. It’s your date with destiny.
  • Invest in anything that will help eliminate external stimulants and distractions from the outside world (eye mask, headphones for meditation, meditation cushions, black-out curtains, etc)
  • Find a guided meditation that helps you achieve whatever goal you have for meditation. Headspace is a great place to start.

Meditation practice has changed my life and making it a daily practice until you can lose yourself in the present moment for 20-30 minutes every day is a great choice.

But these other hobbies are also meditative hobbies that can help depending on your goals. Here are a few to take inspiration from:

  • Gardening: Gardening involves nurturing plants, creating a serene environment, and connecting with nature. It helps reduce stress, improve focus, and offers a sense of accomplishment.
