Once I learned what each color meant, it gave me the knowledge to be more intentional during my meditations.

Congratulations! 

Not everyone experiences seeing colors during their meditations but I remember the first time it happened for me.

It kind of freaked me out. 

I had so many questions like, “What does seeing red during meditation mean?”, “What are chakra energy centers”, and “Where are they located in the body”?

Everything I ran into was either dry, hard to understand, or not very practical.

So, after years of meditation, I decided to write this article and share everything I’ve learned in simple terms.

It’s not just me, right? 

Many folks report seeing colors as swirls, blobs, dots, or even flashes. It’s like a little light show behind your eyelids!

And it’s not only during deep meditation; this can happen any old time. 

But what’s the deal with these colors?

Well, some say these colors have spiritual meanings, like each color is trying to tell us something important. 

Here’s a quick rundown of what some people think:

  • Red: Passion or energy
  • Orange: Creativity or playfulness
  • Yellow: Optimism or happiness
  • Green: Growth or healing
  • Blue: Calmness or peace
  • Purple: Spirituality or intuition

These colors might be more than just random.

It feels like they’re either somehow linked with how the deepest parts of us feel.

Or… they could even be messages or signs, guiding us or showing us something about ourselves.

It’s pretty cool to think that our brains could be throwing us a mystical party, or maybe giving us a heads up about something. 

But remember, it’s always good to listen to your gut. If something feels off, or if you keep seeing the same color and it’s bugging you, it might be worth looking into a bit more.

But there’s also a very specific way of interpreting colors in the world of spirituality and other Eastern healing systems.

It’s all about our chakras

So what are chakras?

Just think of chakras (or chakra energy centers) as power stations of energy that run up and down our spines

There are 7 most commonly talked about chakra energy centers in the meditation practice and each chakra center comes with its own color. 

When we meditate and see one or even multiple colors at once, one or more of these chakra points are ‘activating’, or ‘lighting up’. 

It’s nothing to worry about, in fact it could be your body or Higher Self trying to tell you something:

Your own secret message of wisdom, confirmation, or even warnings!

Seeing a specific color can mean that a particular chakra is super active. For example, if I see a lot of red, it might mean my root chakra is asking for attention, maybe I need to feel more grounded or secure. 

There are many possible colors you might be seeing from the color spectrum but here are the main seven energy centers and their colors you should know:

  • Red: Root chakra (“Muladhara”, feeling grounded and safe, ready to grow)
  • Orange: Sacral chakra (“Svadhisthana”, creativity and emotions)
  • Yellow: Solar Plexus chakra (“Manipura”, gut instinct, confidence, and power)
  • Green: Heart chakra (“Anahata”, love, kindness, and healing)

When I meditate and see colors, it’s like I’m getting a special message just for me. 

The fact that you’re seeing colors can mean a lot of different things, and they’re usually all good!

Regardless of the particular color and its meaning, seeing colors at all is a sign that:

  • Your psychic abilities are activating
  • Visionary experiences are opening up to you
  • Trusting in your intuition and insights will lead to greater experiences
  • You are on the cusp of or experiencing a spiritual awakening

For example, when I see white or golden light, it’s like a sign that I’m tapping into something bigger than myself. It could be a hint that I’m on the right path to understanding the universe and my place in it.

And sometimes, the message is begging you to check in and pay attention to a certain area of your life.  It’s like my body’s way of sending me a signal that something’s up.

In the physical sense, if I start noticing colors popping up with other weird stuff like headaches or a numb feeling, it might be time to check in with a doctor.

In the non physical sense, if I start noticing certain colors mixed in with emotions like sadness, irritation, or things just ‘feel off’, it might be worth digging into it a little bit more.

The important thing is to:

  1. notice when you’re feeling certain sensations
  2. in combination with the color you’re seeing
  3. and ask why

If you keep experiencing any physical discomfort, please go to the doctor and get it checked out!

But also just realize that our physical bodies and our emotions are so closely related that what might feel like a physical reaction might just be an emotional one. It just takes time to tease apart the difference.

I remember reading about how the purple color or seeing purple during meditation could mean I’m getting deeper into my spiritual side.

Where is it located? – Imagine it sitting at the base of your spine, right where your tailbone is. It’s not something you can touch or see; it’s more like a feeling or a sense of being grounded.

What is it about? – The root chakra is all about feeling safe and secure, like having a good place to live and enough food to eat. Being at the bottom of the spine, it’s all about feeling grounded.

Sometimes, seeing red means there are things I need to fix in my life, like if I’m worried about money or not feeling safe. It’s a sign to look at what’s bugging me and find ways to feel more stable.

Here’s what I think about when red pops up in my meditation:

Red is usually a reminder for me that I might need a bit more physical and mental relaxation. Also, to make sure I’m taking care of the basics in life. I try to find comfort and get into a calm state of mind, which some folks call the alpha state.

So, if you see red while you’re chilling with your eyes closed, it might be a nudge to check your relationship with the necessities of life. It’s nothing to get stressed out about, but it’s good to be aware you might have something to work on.

Where is it located? – Imagine this one as a glowing orb of energy sitting in your lower belly, just a couple of inches below your belly button.

What is it about? – This one is all about creativity, emotions, and sensuality.

These are some examples of what orange light visions can mean during meditation:

  • A spark in creativity
  • A surge in my emotional world
  • A call to embrace my sensuality

Sometimes, this orange glow is a gentle reminder to let my feelings flow and not bottle them up. It nudges me to be in tune with my emotions and express them in a free and healthy way.

I’ve learned that incorporating the color orange into my meditation can amplify these messages. 

Whether it’s visualizing orange light, lighting an orange candle, or even holding an orange crystal, it helps me focus on the sacral chakra’s energy. 

And let me tell you, it feels like unlocking a treasure chest of emotional richness and creative potential.

Next, we explore the solar plexus chakra, known as “Manipura” in Sanskrit. 

Where is it located? – Picture this energy center like a shining sun located around your stomach area, just above your belly button and below your rib cage. 

What is it about? – This one has to do with the core of your personal inner power and confidence. Your ‘gut instincts’, or that little voice inside you that’s telling you ‘I can do this’. It can also mean intellect and optimism. It’s like a high-five to your brain, telling you that you’re on the right track with your thinking and learning. Overall, a very positive uplifting energy.

When I see yellow colour, it’s like a signal that I’m growing in my understanding and awareness.

It’s not just me, though; lots of folks find that the yellow color pops up when they’re tackling something tough or learning something new.

Now, let’s gently float to the heart chakra, known as “Anahata” in Sanskrit. 

Where is it located? – Picture this beautiful energy center right in the middle of your chest. Not just on the left side where your physical heart is, but right in the center, glowing with warm, green colors of light

What is it about? – The color green can symbolize growth, healing, and balance. Love and compassion are also heavily associated with this color and chakra center.

When I see green, it feels like a gentle reminder to take the focus off myself and channel it outwards. Turns out it’s really hard to in touch with love and compassion when you’re being self absorbed!

Another reality I check is gratitude.

If you want to get out of yourself and activate the heart chakra, one of the best way to do that is by feeling the emotion of gratitude.

As Dr. Joe Dispenza always says, gratitude is the ultimate state of receivership and is a necessary step to not only achieve higher levels of consciousness during meditation, but also to live from that high level of consciousness in your daily life.

Here’s a little list of what green might mean when it pops up during your quiet time:

  • A call to foster personal growth

Where is it located? – Envision this energy hub located right in the center of your throat, glowing with a soothing, blue colour light.

What is it about? – Blue is often linked to the throat chakra, which is all about communication, expressing ourselves, and speaking our truths. When I see blue, it’s like a gentle nudge reminding me to share my thoughts and ideas more openly.

Finally, we ascend to the crown chakra, known as “Sahasrara” in Sanskrit. 

Where is it located? – Envision this ultimate energy center like a radiant lotus at the very top of your head, glowing with a purple or white light, connecting you to the universe and the divine. 

What is it about? – Just the other day, I was sitting quietly, focusing on my breath, and out of nowhere, this beautiful shade of violet filled my vision. It was like a soft, purple blanket had been draped over my mind’s eye. I felt a sense of peace and a deep connection to something greater than myself.

The crown chakra is your spiritual connection point. The color purple represents higher states of consciousness, where you feel a deep sense of unity with all that is.

Imagine it as the part of you that transcends the physical and connects with the infinite, the feeling of being part of something much larger than yourself.
