Epigenetics is an entire field in science that’s been turning the world upside down. It’s the study of how you can change the way your genes work!

You might know we’re made up of strands of DNA. 

But did you know… the same strand of DNA can be ‘expressed’ in tens of thousands of different ways?

Depending on your thoughts, feelings, actions, and environment, you can actually turn certain genes ‘on’ or ‘off’… Almost like a light switch!

So what does that mean?

This means recovering from the common cold, a sprained ankle, or even genetic conditions is possible with proper meditation.

All you have to do is have the right thoughts, feelings, actions, and environment that can help your body overcome whatever it’s struggling with!

The word disease comes from dis-ease, a lack of ‘ease’! 

If you can ‘get’ sick, can we ‘get’ well? Is there a way we can intentionally step into the other side of the spectrum?

You better believe it!

How To Do Theta Meditation

That sounds great Mike, so how do you even do it?

Describing an internal experience with words is always a challenge but here’s my process with as much details and practical examples of what I mean.

Step 1. Find Your Zen Spot

Find a location where you feel safe. A place where you won’t feel judged. A place where you know you will be able to let go and relax.

For me it’s either in a corner of my bedroom or sitting up on my bed, but it can be anywhere that resonates with you.

With enough meditation practice, you’ll be able to meditate in the parking garage of your work or even throughout the day. 

But when you’re starting out, we want to eliminate as many distracting variables as we can to make sure we make entering theta as easy as possible.

Step 2. Set the Scene for Success

Prime your environment for theta brain waves. The right atmosphere can make or break your meditation experience.

Here are some things I personally do:

Being comfortable and being able to limit external senses are going to help a ton as you attempt to disconnect from the external reality and travel inwards.

Step 3. Enter Alpha State

I’ll recap quickly here but I have written an entire article about the alpha state and how to access it. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re not sure how to access alpha. 

Achieving alpha brain wave activity (the alpha state) is a pre-requisite for being able to experience theta wave activity.

  • Find a comfortable position – even when you do, there will always be an itch! Imagine what your body would feel like and act like when you’re asleep – completely still. Everytime you move for any reason, you’re resetting your descent into alpha!
  • Limit your senses – this is where the eyemask and headphones for meditation come in handy. The less you are connected to the external reality, the easier it will be for you to sink into your inner reality.
  • Relax your body – use the breathing technique to slow your heart rate. Relax your muscles from your scalp to your toes, one muscle group at a time.
  • Relax your mind – use the creative visualization technique to let go of distracting thoughts. Turn up the details to 120% until it almost feels like you’re actually experiencing the experience. 

Congratulations, you’ve found the present moment. Stay in this alpha state for a minute or two. Enjoy it, you’ve earned it!

Step 4. Enter Theta

Now, it’s time to access the theta frequency and theta wave activity to go into a deeper meditative state.

Step 4.1 – Become No body, No one, No where, No thing, in No time, in No space.

You are more than your physical body, you are more than your name, you are more than where you are physically located. In fact, you are more than any ‘thing’. 

Leave behind the things that you’ve used to define you. Leave behind the things you’ve used to limit yourself. This is what it means to become an awareness.

This is what it might look like practically speaking

With your eyes closed:

  • Sense the space around you, around your room
  • Imagine the wall that you are facing, looking slightly above the horizon
  • Imagine slowly floating towards it until you pass through the wall
  • Keep going as you visualize what’s on the other side
  • Keep going up until you can see your house looking back
  • Keep going up until  you can see your city looking back
  • Keep going up until you can see your country looking back
  • Keep going up until you’re in the blackness of space
  • Now leave Earth behind you and keep going into the infinite unknown.
  • How far does your awareness go?

At this point, you are outside of your body. You are no longer your name. You are no where. You are no thing. You are just an awareness. Just an existence.

Where you are, there is no time. Where you are, there are no designated spaces. Everything was, is, and will be. You are outside time and space.

Step 4.2 – Surrender to the Present Moment (The Universe, Your Higher Power, God)

Continue your journey into the unknown as an awareness. 

And when you’re ready, when you’re in awe, when you’re experiencing peace that transcends all understanding, address and surrender to the present moment.

Practically speaking, it might look something like this:

  • You might whisper to the universe something like, “I surrender
  • Imagine roots coming out of the top of your consciousness (we left your head behind!). This represents your essence. Who you are.
  • Imagine the thick distinct roots getting skinner as it spreads out into the universe.
  • Imagine the skinny ends eventually blending into the universe, fusing with it, connected to it, and becoming one with it.
  • Once you’ve established the connection, allow the universe to slowly pour into you.
  • I like the visualize slow bulbs of light or liquid traveling from the universe to me via the roots. Be fully receptive until you are filled with the light or covered with the liquid.
  • Another way of visualizing it is like being in an empty bath or pool with the water turned on. Keep the flow on until you’re completely submerged. Not just to your knees, not just to your chest, but completely from head to toe. 
  • Ideally, you’ll feel so in tune with the water (the universe) that you are not just an awareness in the water but you find that you’re becoming the water, that you are the water.

You are no longer an entity that exists separate from the universe. You have fused and become one with the universe. You are the universe and the universe is you.

Ask the universe to help you surrender and become one with it even more. Give up control.

The less control you have, the more the universe can do.

The bigger your box of what the universe is, the more ways the universe has to show up. 

In fact, let’s get rid of the box altogether!

HERE’S A QUCIK TIP: When you feel like you can go to sleep at any moment during this process, stay present. You can focus on your body position like sitting up straighter or use meditative hand gestures to introduce a little bit of discomfort so you don’t entirely fall asleep.

But when you’re fully connected with the universe, when you’re enjoying the overwhelming but peaceful, grounded moment, you’re in theta.

What You Can Do Once You’ve Achieved Theta Brain Waves

At this point feel free to think about that problem that’s been causing you trouble or that big decision that’s coming up.

Don’t worry. It’s not your job to come up with the answers. Just the questions.

Just like how you surrendered yourself when you became consciousness and one with the universe, surrender the question and just linger in the unknown.

Just like how you allowed the universe to flow into you, stay in a receptive state. As you receive more light, energy, whatever it is in your imagination, an answer may come to you when you least suspect it.

I can’t emphasize this enough:

It’s only when you’re in the unknown

That you can come in contact with answers and solutions that are currently unknown to you.

The question is: Would You Notice?

I’m sure you’ve heard of some variation of this story:

There once was a preacher whose town got a flood warning. “Better get in, preacher. The waters are rising fast,” said one of the townsfolk.

“No,” said the preacher. “I have faith in the Lord. He will save me.”

The waters kept rising and a similar scenario plays out with someone who comes by with a motorboat.

“The Lord will save me!” he insisted. And predictably, he drowns.

When he meets God he asks, “Lord, I had unwavering faith. Why didn’t you deliver me from that flood?”

God shakes his head and asks, “What more did you want from me? I sent you two boats and a helicopter!”

Yes it’s a bit cheeky but here’s the point: 

The Universe, God, Your Higher Power… has probably been trying to communicate with you this whole time. But if you’re not familiar with the language of the universe, you may miss the signs, wondering if this works at all.

The universe can communicate with you in every way imaginable. And more!

Sure, maybe the clouds part and you hear an audible voice telling you exactly what’s up. I really do hope you have an experience like that one day!

But more often than not, and especially in the beginning, it’s a lot more subtle

Examples could be:

  • As simple as just a gut feeling you can’t explain
  • Someone you lost contact with suddenly wanting to meet up for coffee
  • A eureka moment that makes you think: ‘huh, that’s interesting’ or ‘why didn’t i think of that?’
  • Or it could even be something you see on your social feed like Reddit, Instagram, or Youtube.

And here’s the tragic part: most people will chalk it up to ‘coincidences’


Remember This: if you don’t recognize and give thanks for the signs, the universe will stop giving them to you altogether.

Now, I’m not saying you should scroll social media all day because that’s where you’ll get your answers…

(Although funny story, I’ve saved thousands of dollars and counting because of a 5 minute Youtube video. It wasn’t my ‘normal’ content, and it’s not even something I went out of my way to look up. It just came to me, I recognized it, and acted on it.)

What I AM saying is that the universe will attempt to communicate with you in ways you can understand.

All we have to do is get better at recognizing the signs. All we have to do is understand what that message looks like.

You’ll almost treat it like a game. And eventually, it’ll become a natural part of you. 

When this happens, this is how infinite potential gets channeled into the world. This is when not only your life but also the lives of everyone around you (and potentially the WORLD) changes!

If this is stressing you out, you don’t have to worry.

The simple mindset that’ll keep you on the straight and narrow is humility and surrender. As long as you’re approaching this entire process with humility and a sense of surrender, you’ll be able to: 

  • connect to the greater consciousness in the theta state, 
  • ask the right questions, 
  • recognize the answers, and
  • experience massive changes in your life.
